Adult
relationships, in families or not, can be complex and demanding.
Whilst close relationships with others offer the possibility
of our greatest happiness, they also offer opportunities for
our worst behaviour and greatest sadness.
It
is neither a sign of failure, nor very unusual, to seek help
from an impartial outsider when things get too difficult to
manage in a close relationship. Couple counsellors are specifically
trained to understand the dynamics between people, support
them in resolving conflicts, and open up channels for effective
communication. They do not seek to direct the couple - but
to offer a consistent, thoughtful and unbiased ear through
times of difficulty.
I
have been a counsellor for over 20 years and have always worked
with couples as well as individuals. I undertook training
in sex therapy and couple counselling, and am co-author of
a book which helps readers think about the ways men and women
respond sexually to each other (The Good Sex Book: Paul Brown
& Chris Kell).
In
an earlier part of my career, I worked for the Albany Trust
in London and have maintained an interest in, and respect
for, the many different kinds of relationships which the gay,
lesbian and bisexual communities have developed out of adversity
and creativity.
