David SmythI have been working as a full time Person-Centred Therapist since I qualified from the University of East Anglia in 1999. This followed an extensive career in the National Health Service and higher education which included the management of two Teaching hospitals in Birmingham and as Domus Bursar and Fellow of King's College, Cambridge.

I undertake sessional commitments at three general surgeries in East Suffolk and have a thriving private practice. I have a special interest in working with children and couples, having completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Child Psychotherapy and Play Therapy in 2003. I have received special training in post-adoption counselling and carry out work for Barnardos LINK seeing children and adults whose lives are affected by adoption issues. I also see couples who are thinking of adopting and who may need some counselling before starting the often lengthy adoption process.

The first counselling session takes about one hour and is an introductory appointment for which there is no charge. This session is intended to provide couples with as much information as they feel they need in order to decide if they want to enter into a counselling relationship with me. It is important to me that couples have an opportunity to gain an insight into Person-Centred Therapy and how this will be for them. On a personal level, it is an occasion for couples to decide if they want to work with me.

The basis for our work together will be discussed and we can talk about the arrangements for our sessions - meeting together and perhaps also separately if there may be particular issues an individual partner wants separately to address. I will always ensure that couples are content with the arrangements that we work out. The process for each couple is always different and I will always try flexibly to accommodate a couple's particular therapeutic wishes both individually and as a couple.

There are also occasions when, for instance, a couple with young children, may not be able to see me at my home. I am pleased to see people in their own homes if this can be arranged. There is an additional charge for home visits which will vary according to the total travel time involved
